Dr. Jekyll speaks of Mr. Hyde as those parts of himself, indeed every human being, that are evil but are usually suppressed by what Freud called the superego*, the monitor in our mind created by civilization, education and training. In the case of Hyde, Jekyll’s baser nature has been released.
*In Freudian theory, the division of the unconscious that is formed through the internalization of moral standards of parents and society, and that censors and restrains the ego.
